About 5000 people with various cases of eye problems turned up for the former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo’s free eye screening and surgery exercise which ended in Abeokuta on Wednesday.
The Chief Operating Officer of the Olusegun Obasanjo Foundation, Dr. Olalekan Makinde, who made this disclosure at a news conference to end the 2016 edition of the exercise, declared that growing trend among those in the age bracket of 15-40 years with eye problems, was noticed.
He said that about 5000 that was registered during the two day screening exercise and that 3000 of them were offered glasses and drugs after being discovered to be having eye defections while others were only given drugs to correct their eye infections.
Makinde, who disclosed that the exercise was forced to be extended for additional two days “in order to accommodate more beneficiaries noted that about 300 persons were made to undergo surgeries,” assuring that the Foundation would strive to reduce the eye defection trend with the free eye screening programme nationwide.
Among the beneficiaries, 11 year-old Adesina Ameerah, said she came to the programme with eye-itching problem, but, "I want to thank God that, I was offered treatment free of charge and was given ree drugs too."
