The Kano State Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) has announced a second-chance education programme for out-of-school girls and dropouts who are unable to attend conventional schools.

The initiative has enrolled 5,100 girls from 13 local government areas into adult education centres, offering them a renewed opportunity to continue their studies.

The Deputy Project Coordinator, Malam Ahmed Jibril, made the disclosure during AGILE’s interactive session with the media in Kano.

He emphasised that the programme aims to address barriers preventing girls from accessing secondary education, including socio-cultural norms, financial constraints and inadequate infrastructure.

As part of the initiative, 130 new secondary schools will be built across 24 local government areas.

Also, 60 mentors and 2,234 facilitators across 340 schools have undergone training in life skills, which will be extended to 148,484 female students across all 44 local government areas of the state.

In a related development, Kano-based journalist, Dr. Maude Rabi’u Gwadabe delivered a presentation on the role of journalism in promoting girls’ education.

He urged journalists to adopt issue-driven and solution-oriented reporting while adhering to ethical standards.
