At least 560 cattle rustlers took the Oath of repentance last year in Jigawa State, Commander of Gyara Kayanka Association, Malam Ahmadu Dodo has said.
Dodo, who made the disclosure yesterday in Kudai village, Dutse local government area of the state during one of such occasions, said most of the cattle rustlers who bid a farewell to the crime took the oath in public while others in secret.
He said the repentant rustlers were not expected to take only an oath of repentance but also to expose those that refused to come forward as well as buyers of the rustled cattle.
The commander said “We don’t have the actual number of the repentant rustlers because many are still coming to us. However, as of December last year 560 people from across the state repented.”
He said the aim of the association was to curtail cattle rustling and other related crimes, noting that “The purpose for which it was founded has started yielding result. We are now receiving repentant rustlers who decided to abandon the practice and build a better future.”
