5,840 rural women get FG’s cash grant in Borno

She said the beneficiaries of the programme were expected to make good use of the opportunity to increase their grant, FG, Borno

The federal government, yesterday, flagged off a cash grant programme in which 5,840 rural women in Borno State received N20, 000 each.

Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq, said during the exercise in Maiduguri that the Special Cash Grant for Rural Women programme was introduced in 2020 by the ministry as part of President Muhammadu Buhari’s social inclusion and poverty reduction agenda, including the realisation of the national aspiration of lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in 10 years.

She said, “It is designed to provide a one-off grant to some of the poorest and most vulnerable women in rural Nigeria. A grant of N20, 000.00 will be disbursed to over 150,000 poor rural women across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory. The grant is expected to increase access to financial capital required for economic activities.”

She said the beneficiaries of the programme were expected to make good use of the opportunity to increase their income, enhance their food security, and contribute towards improving their living standard.

Governor Babagana Zulum, represented by the Head of Service, Simon Malgwi, said the intervention would get to the targeted persons who were expected to start life afresh with gradual return of normalcy in the state.

He said Borno is worst-hit by insurgency and requires more financial support.
