6 arraigned over alleged N174,000 property theft

The police in Lagos on Monday arraigned six men, who allegedly broke into a shop and stole property worth N174,000.

The defendants are Rabiu Mogaji, 45; Ashiru Hammed, 23; Isah Mohammed, 35; Abdullahi Adamu, 20; Sanusi Muhammed 22; Ali Saheed, 29 and Ashiru Umar, 20.

The defendants, whose addresses were not provided in court, were brought before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court on a three-count charge of stealing, assault and breach of the peace.

They, however, pleaded not guilty of the charge.

The Prosecutor, ASP. Clement Okuoimose, told the court that the defendants broke into the shop of one Mr Ajibola Adams on June 7, at 9:25p.m. at Iyana-Era Bus Stop, Ijanikin, Lagos State.

Okuoimose submitted that the defendants broke into the shop and stole N165,000 and a wristwatch worth N2,000, among other items belonging to the complainant.

“The defendants also used plank to injure the complainant when he caught them in the act.

“They conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause breach of public peace by attacking the complainant,” he added.

He said the offences contravened Sections 287, 173 and 165 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Lazarus Hotepo, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N500,000 each, with two sureties each in like sum.

He adjourned the case until Aug. 6 for hearing. (NAN)
