6 blockbuster movies to watch this summer
Summer is here, and there are a number of must-watch movies about to hit cinemas. That’s why this week,Weekend Magazine has taken the liberty of sharing six movies that you can’t afford to miss this season.
The Lion King
A remake of the 1994 Disney movie of the same name will see a revamp, turning the original traditionally animated movie to photorealistic computer animation. The decision to remake ‘The Lion King’ was as a result of the huge success of ‘The Jungle Book.’ The ensemble cast includes Donald Glover, Seth Rogan, Beyoncé, Chiwetel Ejiofor and James Earl Jones, who will be reprising his role as Mufasa. The release date is July 19th.
The Bling Lagosians
‘The Bling Lagosians’ which hit cinemas just yesterday, follows the Holloways, one of Lagos’s most prestigious families, as they prepare to celebrate the 51st birthday of the family’s matriarch while at the same time, trying to prevent the closure of the family business. Directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters, the movie stars Jide Kosoko, Bisola Aiyola, Toyin Abraham, Elvina Ibru and Helen Paul.
Spiderman: Far From Home
Arguably the biggest movie to hit cinemas this summer is Marvel’s ‘Spiderman: Far From Home,’ the sequel to the 2017 ‘Homecoming.’ This movie follows the events of the record breaking ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ starring Tom Holland in the titular role of Peter Parker/Spiderman with Samuel L. Jackson, Zendaya, Jake Gyllenhaal, Cobie Smulders and Marisa Tomei. ‘Spiderman: Far From Home’ is due to hit cinemas on July 2nd.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Director extraordinaire Quentin Tarantino is back with another potentially critical masterpiece this summer on the 26th ofJuly. ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ will star Leonardo DiCaprio, who we haven’t seen on screen since his Academy Award winning stint in 2016’s ‘The Revenant.’ Brad Pitt will also be starring alongside DiCaprio with Margot Robbie, Al Pacino and Dakota Fanning.
The Set Up
The Nollywood movie stars Adesua Etomi-Wellington as Chike for an entertaining production due to be one of the biggest movies of the summer. Also starring in Niyi Akinmolayan’s ‘The Set Up’ are Jim Iyke and Dakore Egbuson-Akande, in a scheme for of socialite trying to marry a wealthy heiress. Catch it at your nearest cinema on August 9th.
Hobbs & Shaw
‘Hobbs & Shaw’ is a spinoff the hit ‘Fast and the Furious’ franchise with Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson and Jason Statham reprising their roles as Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw respectively. The buddy cop action flick will be released on August 2nd, and will also star Idris Elba, Vanessa Kirby as well as Helen Mirren who will also be reprising her role from the 2017 ‘Fate of the Furious.’
