Six people were killed and 13 others injured in two separate explosions in Kano yesterday.
The explosions occurred two hours after the state commissioner of police, Adenerele Shinaba, announced the discovery of a bomb-laden Peugeot 406 car primed for detonation during the Eid prayers. The bomb was defused by the police.
The first explosion occurred around noon when a female suicide bomber blew up herself at Kofar Nasarawa near the Northwest University.
The bomber, who was believed to be around 16 years old, was walking towards the university when policemen on patrol stopped her for questioning.
The area where she was seen links to Radio Kano, a Juma’at mosque and the Eid prayer ground.
No other person was killed, but five policemen were injured in the explosion. They were receiving medication at Murtala Muhammad Specialist hospital as at yesterday.
The second explosion occurred at St. Charles Family Church in Sabon Gari area around 2pm. The bomb killed five persons including a soldier.
Daily Trust gathered that the bomb was thrown from a primary school into a crowd of worshipers while they were leaving the church. Eight other persons were injured in the blast.
Police Commissioner Shinaba confirmed the casualty figure.
“The service went successfully well and the worshipers were leaving the church when a bomb was thrown from one of the class rooms in a primary school which is directly opposite the church,” he said.
“Five people died (including) two women, who were presumed to be worshipers, two others and a soldier who was on duty at the church.”
Meanwhile, the Police Force headquarters in Abuja yesterday said five suspects were arrested in connection with the Kano attacks.
Force spokesman Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Frank Mba, in a statement, said, “Police operatives in the ancient city have arrested five male suspects for their complicity in the attacks.
“Two were arrested in connection with the foiled bomb attack at Isyaku Rabiu Mosque, while three were arrested in connection with the attack at St. Charles church.”
Earlier in the day, CP Shinaba said they discovered a “heavy” explosive device loaded in a Peugeot 406 with a registration number AA 513 ZAK Bauchi.
 Shinaba said the car was discovered around 1am on Saturday parked near Isyaku Rabi’u Juma’at mosque, Goron Dutse.
 He said the car was parked “strategically in an area where there was going to be a heavy crowd this morning (yesterday) for Eid prayer and the essence is to blow up as many as possible.”
