Six people have been killed in road crashes in Plateau and Nasarawa states.
Two people were killed while 16 others injured in a crash involving a trailer and five cars around Polo Roundabout in Jos North LGA of Plateau State.
Peter Yakubu Longsan, Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in the state, said, “The accident involved a tanker and five other vehicles. The crash was reported to the FRSC at 6:49pm and we immediately went for the rescue.
“Eighteen people were involved, two male adults died on the spot, 16 others who suffered various degrees of injury were taken to Plateau State Specialist Hospital and Bingham University Teaching Hospital (BUTH). The corpses of the deceased were deposited at BUTH.
“Witnesses reported that the tanker lost brakes immediately after the Plateau State Specialist Hospital Roundabout and kept descending until it crashed and rested on vehicles. In order to avert conflagration, sister agencies mobilised themselves and put hands on deck, cordoned the vicinity and diverted traffic to ensure the safety of road users.
“Thankfully, there was no spillage of the contents of the tanker, as the risk of fire outbreak became low. The sister agencies present at the scene included the police, civil defence, Operation Rainbow, vigilantes, army, fire service, VIOs and the Red Cross.“
Similarly, the FRSC in Nasarawa State disclosed four deaths in an accident involving three trucks at the annual Eggon Carnival in Nasarawa-Eggon LGA.
The accident occurred on December 28, when one of the trucks rammed into a procession, injuring many others.
FRSC Sector Commander, Yahaya Sabo-Adikwu, attributed the crash to reckless driving.
Daily Trust learnt that following the crash, the 2025 Eggon Carnival was cancelled, with the organisers expressing deep sorrow over the loss of lives.
The Aren Eggon, Ahmed Ubangari-Alaku, suspended palace activities for three days following the tragic accident.
The Sarkin Fadan Eggon, Yahaya Inusa, announced the suspension in a statement as a mark of respect for the deceased.
Governor Abdullahi Sule also condoled the Aren Eggon and the entire Eggon Nation over the tragic accident.
