A trailer carrying passengers and cattle reportedly crashed around Zone 8 Roundabout, Lokoja, capital of Kogi State, killing six people, with over 60 others sustaining various degrees of injuries.
A witness said the accident happened on Tuesday around 3.30pm when the trailer lost control, on approaching the roundabout, veered off the road and crashed into a drainage.
The truck is said to have been heading to Enugu State from Bauchi before the incident happened at Lokoja, suspected to have been caused by brake failure.
“We counted about six dead passengers, and several others with life-threatening injuries on the spot.
“Many of the passengers sustained injuries when they encountered the horns of the cows in the melee that ensued before the trailer finally crashed.
“Several cows were sighted on the ground with serious injuries, with many presumed dead. While others were seen running into the bush in confusion”, said Abubakar Dansabe, a mobile trader who claimed to be around the scene of the incident.
The Kogi Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr Samuel Oyedeji said, “The accident occurred around 3pm, and I can confirm to you that six persons died, while 60 others got injured in the process.”
