Police in Ogun State said they are still in search of the suspected killers of the Director of Finance and Administration at Governor’s Office, Taiwo Oyekanmi, six weeks after the incident.

Our correspondent reports that the government accountant had picked up a sum of N112million from Fidelity and Sterling banks’ branches in Abeokuta, and was heading back to the office at Oke Mosan, when the home-made bullion van conveying him and the money was waylaid by the gunmen.

The hooded gunmen, about five of them, reportedly hijacked the bullion van while ascending the overhead bridge at Kuto and opened fire on the accountant.

It was further gathered that the hoodlums wielding sledge hammers broke the bullion van’s door and went away with the government’s money.

Oyekanmi was rushed to the state hospital in Ijaye, Abeokuta, where he reportedly died.

Remains of the deceased had already been buried with Governor Dapo Abiodun giving security agencies a marching order to smoke out the killers.

On December 8, Governor Abiodun placed a reward of N50million for anyone who offers information that could lead to the arrest of the killers of the accountant.

In the announcement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Tokunbo Talabi, the government assured that information provided would be treated with utmost confidentiality.  

City & Crime reports that the police have equally beefed security around the state’s capital as part of the efforts to track down the suspects.

The police have also mounted checkpoints along the Abeokuta-Sagamu expressway as part of the search for the killers.

However, efforts of the security agencies have yielded no results, six after the incidents.

Responding to questions on the incident, the police commissioner, Abiodun Alamutu, said his men are working “assiduously” to track down the suspects.

He said he wants to refrain from commenting on the incident until the conclusion of the investigation and arrest of the suspects. 

“I assure you that we are working assiduously on it and very soon we are going to get at the culprits,” Alamutu said.
