United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) on Tuesday said 60 percent of Nigerian women are at risk of maternal deaths as they do not have access to or utilize available life serving services.
According to UNFPA the 2013 NDHS shows that less than 40 of Nigerian women gave birth with a skilled attendant.
Speaking at a 3 day Capacity Building of State Focal Persons on Data Collection, Collation, Validation, Transmission and Verbal Autopsy organized by Sultan Foundation, Head of UNFPA Kaduna Sub-Office, Mariama Darboe said Northern States are worse off with State like Zamfara having 96 percent of deliveries with no skilled attendant at birth.
She said, "Globally, the use of skilled Assistants during delivery has been identified as a key predictor in the reduction of mortality rates. Unfortunately, 2013 NDHS shows that less than 40 percent of Nigerian women gave birth with a skilled attendant.
"This data suggests that over 60 percent of Nigerian women are at excess risk of maternal death as they do not have access to or utilize available life serving services.
"Disaggregating this data by States, shows that Northern States are worse off with States like Zamfara having 96 percent of deliveries with no skilled attendant at birth."
She explained that UNFPA is committed to supporting maternal health initiatives that will ensure that no woman dies in the course of pregnancy and childbirth.
