‘60 per cent of Nigerians depend on groundwater’

The association noted during a courtesy call on the minister of Water Resources, Mrs Sarah Reng Ochekpe that over 60 per cent of Nigerians depended solely on groundwater as their source of water supply.
Chief Dom Nwachukwu, President of NAH said that it was also important for the ministry to provide a solid foundation for the implementation of the code of practice for water well construction.
“It is a well known fact that groundwater development in Nigeria has not enjoyed the best of practice in the past and even presently. NAH is out to remedy this situation through collaboration with the ministry,” he said.
He stressed the need to establish a centre for excellence for groundwater in the country, adding that such centre would spearhead research and training in the area.
He said that groundwater had not enjoyed any donor support in the past so it was important to strengthening existing bilateral and multilateral co-operations to benefit the sector.
NAH according to the President is at the vanguard of providing professional expertise to Nigeria on groundwater development.
