The immediate past Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Niger State, Mainasara Dan-Malam, has disclosed that about 60 people were handed death sentence for heinous crimes in the state between 2015 and now.

Briefing journalists on the activities of his ministry in the last four years, Dan-Malam also revealed that 25 persons were handed life sentence within the period.

He said the feat was a significant breakthrough in the judicial system and a departure from the period when cases dragged for years with offenders enjoying freedom for heinous crimes, while those with minor cases rotted in jail.

He said the ministry had been able to put in place innovations aimed at decongesting the courts and prisons, adding that one of such measures was the establishment of the Gender and Domestic Violence Department, which he said had assisted in reducing incidences of rape and assault against women.
