A 60-year-old man, Mr Daniel Sakpe, has hanged himself in the Omobayi area of Itapaji in the Ikole council area of Ekiti State.
The incident has thrown the community into confusion.
Eko Trust learnt that Sakpe, a father of five, had told his wife about 12am on Monday that he wanted to go to the toilet to ease himself. Worried by the long delay in his return, the wife called out to him many times, but without any response from the toilet, thus forcing her to raise an alarm that woke up one of their children, Rebecca, who went out to search for her father.
The girl later found her father’s body hanging on a rope inside the house after she flashed the torchlight towards the ceiling.
Neighbours who expressed shock at the tragic development said the deceased was not moody nor did he give any premonition that he would commit suicide, as “he had been part of those who conducted the church service in high spirit on Sunday.”
The Ekiti State Police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO), Caleb Nwachukwu, said he was yet to be briefed on the matter when our correspondent called him to confirm the development. He promised to get back once he was able to do that, but was yet to at the time of filing the report.
A sympathiser told our correspondent that officials from the Ikole police station had recovered the body and begun investigation into the development.
