The AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) Nigeria has distributed free sani-tary pads to 600 girls in its effort to fight period poverty as the world marks this year’s Menstrual Health Day (MHD).

Steve Aborisade, Advocacy & Market-ing Manager of AHF Nigeria, harped on ending period poverty during the event held to mark the MHD at the Agyogoyo Angwan-Jukun community in Makurdi, the Benue State capital.

 He said in order to eliminate the harm-ful stigma surrounding menstruation, which keeps women and menstruating people of all ages from thriving, gov-ernment at all levels and partners must join hands together with AHF to make it a reality.

Aborisade emphasised that AHF ob-served the Menstrual Health Day an-nually on May 28, in order to raise awareness about the importance of menstrual health education and re-sources.

“We are here today to demonstrate what we want government to do. We have to end period poverty and gov-ernment must invest in the lives of these young ones.

“A lot of girls get infections from the things such as rags, tissues and cotton wool, which they used during their menstruation. Government can ear-mark little amount of 0.5per cent health budget to care for them,” he said.

Dr. Ladi Swende who is a family physi-cian at the Federal Medical Centre in Makurdi took the girls on a practical session while demonstrating how they should use sanitary pads correctly.
