68% pass NECO with credits in English, maths

The National Examinations Council (NECO) yesterday released results of the June/July 2015 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) results with an improved performance in English Language and Mathematics.
The results showed  68.56 % pass in five credits including English Language and Mathematics.
Releasing the results in Minna, the Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of NECO, Professor Abdulrashid Garba, said  969, 491 candidates sat for the examinations while over 664,000 had five credits and above, including English and Mathematics, representing 68.56 per cent.
The effort, he said, represents 12 per cent improvement over the 2014 results where 98,886 candidates sat for the same examinations recording 511,931 passes at credit level in five subjects and above representing 52.29 per cent. He said the improved performance was as a result of the home-grown curriculum operated by the council.
On state-by-state analysis, he said Delta State recorded the highest number of passes with 83.5 percent followed by Edo with 83.3 percent while Yobe  has the lowest percent of passes with 36 percent followed by Zamfara with 38.5 percent .
 The result released by the registrar showed that of the 22,388 candidates who sat for the examination in Delta State, 18,698 passed with five credits including Mathematics and English while in Edo, 21,650 of the 25,953 candidates passed with five credits and above.
Also in the least pass level analysis, of 16,106 candidates in Yobe, only 6,075 passed with five credits and above representing 36 percent, followed by Zamfara with 9,492 pass with five credits and above with English  and Mathematics of the 24,599 who sat for the examination representing 38.5 percent.
On the rate of indebtedness to NECO and its effects on candidates, he said only 13 states were partially indebted to NECO, with commitment to pay, hence, the release of such results while some private schools also owe the organization.
