The Chief Judge of Ekiti State High Court, Justice John Adeyeye, has released a total of 69 awaiting trial inmates.
While on his first official visit to the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Ado Ekiti, since assumption of duty in June 2021, as Ekiti State chief judge, Justice Adeyeye commended the comptroller and his men for keeping a clean and healthy environment, thereby making the facility more accommodating and conducive for the inmates.
Earlier, the comptroller of the centre, Mr Olayemi Joseph Ojo, who conducted the chief judge round the facilities, thanked him for the timely visit, adding that the visit will immensely alleviate the suffering of the inmates.
Olayemi said the facility was designed to accommodate less than 400 inmates, but it has almost been overstretched by locking about 700.
He urged the chief judge to encourage magistrates to make use of non-custodial sentences, such as community services, which will drastically help in decongesting correctional centres.
