The flag-off ceremony was held in Suru town in Suru LGA of the state recently.
The fertiliser distribution is part of the Women Empowerment Programme of the wife of the President, Dame Patience Jonathan’s contribution to encourage women to go into farming.
The flag-off exercise in Suru was because of the strategic position of Suru as the food basket of the state due to the involvement of women in commercial rice production, fish farming, poultry, cattle fattening and other livestock farming ventures.
The first lady, who was represented by the North-West PDP Woman Leader, Hajiya Mariya Waziri, at the flag-off ceremony, said this is one of her efforts to support Nigerian women in agriculture from her pet programme, Women Empowerment Programme.
She stated that the distribution is one of the programmes designed by her office to encourage women to go into ventures such as poultry and fish farming, hides and skin and animal fattening.
“Women farming is feeding the nation as a whole, therefore I recognise the important role women are playing in contributing to family upkeep through farming in Kebbi State,” she said.
While assuring of her support, the first lady said the fertiliser was distributed free to all women farmers in Kebbi and pleaded to them to make proper use of it.
The Kebbi State Chief Technical Officer of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Mr Paul Na’Allah, said the federal government has observed that women have not benefited enough from the GES fertiliser distribution programme, hence the need to compliment the programme with free distribution directly to women at their farms.
