Operatives of the Navy have taken into custody seven members of a notorious cross border petrol smuggling syndicate operating around Apapa, Ojo and Badagry axis in Lagos State.
The suspects, who were arrested on Sunday, were first sighted from the Western Regional Control Centre of Falcon Eye Alignment.
Parading the suspects on Wednesday, the Commander of the NNS BEECROFT, Commodore Paul PonfaNimmyel, said naval officers stationed at TARKWA BAY, Apapa, swung into action, adding that on sighting the officers, the crew onboard the wooden boat, fled towards Benin Republic.
The commander said after hours of hot pursuit, the boat and seven suspects onboard were arrested.
He said, “A search conducted revealed that the boat had 408 empty drums, three pumping machines and eight Yamaha 40HP outboard engines. It is gratifying to note that this action has prevented a significant economic loss.”
