7 killed in Kogi auto crash

A fatal accident involving a sienna bus has claimed the lives of seven persons along Okene-Lokoja road at Osara settlement in Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi State.

The bus, with registration number Edo: SGD 517 XL, was said to be on its way to Abuja from Auchi, when the accident occured Sunday afternoon.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver suddenly lost control of the vehicle and rammed into a stationary truck in the process, killing the driver and a motor mate who were fixing a punctured tyre on the trailer.

According to the Kogi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lawal Fagge, the incident occurred at about 12:30 p.m. on Sunday near Osara settlement.

He said the driver of the vehicle was driving on high speed, when he experienced a tyre burst, making him to loose control of the vehicle, which resulted in the fatal accident.

“The driver was on top speed when his tyre burst. In the process, he lost control of the vehicle, left his track and rammed into a stationary articulated vehicle beside the road side, where its driver and motor mate were fixing a punctured tyre.

“Seven persons, including motor mate of the truck driver, died on the spot, while three persons survived the carnage. The injured were taken to a hospital at Okene for treatment, while the dead were deposited at another hospital at Okene for autopsy,” he said.

He advised drivers to always check their vehicle properly before setting out for a journey to prevent such incidents on the highways.
