Former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris’ bowed out of service yesterday after reaching the retirement age. However, his tenure as the IGP was eventful and laced with controversies.

Idris’ tenure saga
Former IGP, Ibrahim Idris had quite a dramatic turn of events emanating from reports on his retirement from office.
He was alleged to have lobbied to get an extension of six-month to his tenure but as series of event kept unfolding, President Buhari decorated a new acting IGP, Mohammed Adamu who assumed duty Wednesday.

The Idris, Saraki and Senate saga
The sad offa robbery incident which took place in April 2018 had both the former IGP, Ibrahim Idris and Senate President Bukola Saraki issuing summons.
Idris, in July 2018, asked Saraki to be at the Intelligence Response Team (ITR) office for investigation after some of the robbery suspects confessed that they were thugs of the senate president, an allegation Saraki denied.
Saraki, on the other hand, had invited Idris to explain why Senator Dino Melaye was maltreated by the police despite his status as a federal lawmaker and the killing of seven Police officers at Galadimawa Junction in Abuja.

#ENDSARS saga
On 14 August 2018, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo directed the former IGP, Ibrahim Idris to dismantle Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) following persistent complaints and reports on the activities of the SARS which was said to violate human rights.
Idris, who bowed to the directive, ordered the immediate re-organization of SARS across the country.

Dino Melaye, who is still in the nest of the Nigeria police, has been having quite a long face-off with the police during the immediate former IGP’s tenure.

The Benue killings saga
When the news of the continuous killings in Benue broke, President Buhari ordered the former IGP, Ibrahim Idris to relocate to Benue State which he complied.
After a few days in Benue, as reported, he returned to Abuja a few days later to celebrate his 59th birthday and stayed in Abuja afterwards.

The Marriage saga
Reports of how the former IGP impregnated a junior female officer and had her promoted made waves in the news-sphere.
He explained that he married the officer, adding that there was no law prohibiting him from doing so.

The ‘transmission’ video saga
One of Idris’ top headline events was when a video, showing him stuttering the word ‘transmission,’ broke the internet.
The video, which was believed to be doctored, had the former IGP reading an address where he kept repeating ‘transmission’ which became a popular nickname.
