The Climate Change Adaptation and Agribusiness Support Programme (CASP), has raised 420,000 assorted tree seedlings for distribution in seven northern states for the development of plantations and woodlots with a view to mitigating the effect of climate change,

This was contained in a statement by the National Coordinator of the programme, Muhammad Lawal Idah, after presenting the programme’s mid-term report in Dutse, Jigawa State.

He said the programme was funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) in collaboration with Federal Ministry of Agriculture.

He stated that the programme focused on integrating climate change resilience adaptation measures for enhancing the production of rice, wheat, maize, sorghum, millet, cowpea and groundnut in Borno, Jigawa, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto. Zamfara and Yobe states.

Muhammad said the programme had reached out to about 30,000 small-holder farmers through the establishment of 894 Farmer Field/Farmer Business School (FF/FBS) as against the 35,000 targeted farmers, adding that this was achieved under its productivity enhancement and climate change resilience.

The statement added that under agricultural value chain financing, CASP had facilitated a loan of about N200 million to 1,308 farmers, while a total of 1,730 youths had received starter packs for animal traction, processing equipment and assorted inputs.
