7 suspected cultists arrested over lawyer’s murder in Rivers

Police in Rivers State have arrested seven suspected cult members in connection with the murder of Port Harcourt-based lawyer, Bright Owhor. Owhor was shot on July 5, 2025, by gunmen along Market Road in Rumuomasi, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

According to a statement from the  Rivers State Police spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the police command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit spent ten days on discreet intelligence and technical surveillance to track down and arrest the suspects.

Iringe-Koko stated that the suspects have confessed to the crime and admitted to withdrawing funds from the 46-year-old victim’s bank account. They also claimed responsibility for recent cult attacks in the Diobu area of Port Harcourt.

The police spokesperson provided a timeline, noting that Owhor was shot on July 5, 2025, at about 9.30pm. He was rushed to the hospital but died on July 6, 2025, at about 2am.

The suspects confessed to being members of the Deygbam Secret Cult Group.

She listed items recovered from the suspects, to include; one SIM card, four locally made pistols and seven rounds of 9mm ammunition, two live cartridges, one mini bus and one Toyota Camry car.
