June 12, 1993 is said to be one of the most important dates in Nigeria’s history. It is regarded as the authentic ‘Democracy day’, a day that Nigerians think should be the right day for celebrating Nigeria’s democracy.

Here are 7 things you should know about this date:

  – The date is celebrated in honour of the annulled presidential election of June 12, 1993.

–  The election was annulled by Ibrahim Babangida, because of alleged evidence that it was corrupt and unfair.

 –  The election was declared the freest and fairest presidential election in Nigeria by national and international observers 

 –  For the June 12, 1993 presidential elections, Abiola’s running mate was Baba Gana Kingibe.

 – Chief MKO Abiola contested in the June 12 elections under the Social Democratic Party (SDP)

 –   June 12 is celebrated in Nigeria every year to remember Chief Abiola; and it is marked as a public holiday in most states in the South West.
