“About 70% of Nigeria’s population practice open defecation.” This was revealed by Director, Quality Control and Sanitation of the Ministry of Water Resources, Mr Samuel Ome in a National Stakeholders workshop on the Development of National Hygiene Promotion Strategy held in Abuja yesterday.
Mr Ome who represented the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mrs Rabi Jimeta said, “In Nigeria, about 70% of Nigeria’s population practice open defecation. In Abuja here, when you go through streets and highways, you see them there. The reason is that not many people have access to decent toilets, we cannot pretend. And once they pass it there, fly will touch it, perch on a fruit, and someone will consume the fruit, the next thing is that he/she has running stomach, these are the problems. So if we are able to control open defecation, we will reduce some health problems.” Ome said In his opening remarks.
