Bayero University Kano (BUK) is to award first class degree to 72 students this year, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Muhammad Yahuza Bello has said.
Addressing a press conference on Monday, Professor Bello said the unversity would graduate 8,635 students this year during its 34th Convacation.
Professor Bello said the convocation was scheduled to hold between April 3th and 7th, 2018.
He said 5,401 would receive first degree; 70 PhD; 1,833 master’s degree and 656 would be awarded with Postgraduate Diploma certificates.
However, he said the University Senate and Governing Council had decided not to award any honorary degree this year.
He said, "This is not because there are no persons deserving of the honor; indeed, there are so many. In order to maintain the high value and honor associated with such degrees, Bayero University Senate and council have been limiting the number of honorees, and the years when such awards are made."
Professor Bello said the university had greatly improved on its records of academic excellence, noting that in the last one year, the institution had secured full accreditation of all then programmes it presented to the National Universities Commission (NUC).
He added that recently, the university had got acceeditation of 15 undergraduate and eight postgraduate programmes.
The vice chancellor also said the institution had admitted a total of 8,600 new students this year.
