The Tin Can Island command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), on Wednesday, said it intercepted eight containers loaded with cutlasses, as well as 145 kilogrammes of Indian hemp being smuggled into the country by “merchants of death”.

It said the containers had 206,000 pieces of machetes, 145kg of the illicit drugs and others items worth over N1.048bn.

Oloyede said the machetes were seized due to the security issues in the country and that there was no end-user-certificate from the office of the national security adviser (NSA) for the importation of such items.

He said, “The importation of these products contravenes Sections 46, 47 and 161 of the Customs and Excise Management Act (CEMA) Cap 45 LFN 2004.”

Oloyede further stated that efforts were on to apprehend those behind the import.
