Eight men appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Thursday facing charges related to alleged cultism and an attack on a police station.

The defendants are Idris Dauda (20), Quadri Fadipe (22), Nurudeen Adeniyi (23), Selim Tunde (19), Afolabi Kundus (19), Ojo Michael (37), Ahmed Azeez (20), and Nurudeen Dare (39).

They face a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy, membership in an unlawful society, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.

The prosecutor, SP Josephine Ikhayere, alleged that the defendants and others still at large committed the offences on February 1, at about 3am in the Ijanikin area of Lagos. 

She stated that they conspired to commit a felony, specifically unlawful society membership and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.

Ikhayere further alleged that the defendants belonged to the proscribed Eiye Confraternity.

She told the court that the defendants conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by attacking the Ijanikin Police Station with stones, sticks, iron rods, and other dangerous weapons.

According to the prosecution, the offences contravene Section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, and Section 2(3)(a)(b)(c)(d) of the Unlawful Societies (Prohibition) and Cultism Law of Lagos State, 2021.

The court declined to take the defendants’ pleas.

 The Magistrate, Mr. Lateef A. Owolabi, ordered that they be remanded in a correctional facility and adjourned the case until March 24, for further proceedings. (NAN)
