The police in Ogun State have arrested eight secondary school students of Ifo High School for allegedly engaging in cult related activities within the school premises.
The arrested students, aged 15 years, are Bennett Bolawatife, Aluko Taiwo, Kehinde Aluko while Omolaso Waris, Akinola Ifeoluwa, Azeez Hassan, Kilani Babatunde aka Soldier and Fasedemi Samuel are 16 years old.
Police spokeswoman in the state, Omolola Odutola, said the arrest followed an alarm raised by the school headship over an emerging gang of student cultists.
According to Odutola, they were arrested on Friday at about 12:05 pm by the Ifo division of the command in collaboration with the school authorities.
She noted that the suspects were perpetuating disturbances and extorting valuables from fellow students.
Odutola said: “The Vice Principal of Ifo High School, Mr. Alako Oluwole, alongside a teacher, Mr. Akinseku Oloruntoba Julius, reported that a group of students had been involved in cult-related activities, perpetuating disturbances and extorting valuables from fellow students.
According to her, it was discovered that the students were members of one Future Guys (F.T.G.) cult group and were allegedly initiated by two senior students, identified as Ebenezer Ope (the group’s president) and Ebenezer Tobi, both in SSS1.
She disclosed that further investigation is ongoing to determine the extent of cult activities in the school and prevent further occurrences, adding that the suspects will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department upon the conclusion of preliminary investigation.
The Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, directed that the students be brought before him on the next working day for further interviews.
