Eight suspected members of a secret cult gang, whom the police described as members of the Aiye confraternity, have been arrested over their alleged involvement in the death of a police officer attached to the Ijanikin police station in Lagos.
The Lagos police command was, by press time yesterday, still keeping the name of the deceased under wraps.
Daily Trust learnt that the cultists allegedly killed the police officer, who was said to be an Administrative Officer in the Force, on Tuesday at a drinking joint adjacent the office of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Ijanikin unit, where he had attended a birthday party.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Chike Oti, who confirmed the killing, said that the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the Ijanikin police station mobilised his men to the scene immediately he got the information.
Oti stated that the killers opened fire when they sighted the police team.
“Luck, however, ran against eight of them who the policemen rounded up. Those arrested have made useful statements that are helping the police,” he added.
