About 944 Nigerians have been treated for fibroid-related cases across the country.
The Managing Director/CEO of Fibroid Fertility Centre, Abuja, Dr. Abayomi Ajayi, stated this during the 2026 Reproductive Health Week in the FCT on Wednesday.
The ages of these patients range from 24 to 55 years.
Speaking at the opening forum themed “Transforming Fibroid Care in Nigeria: Our Experience with Non-Invasive Treatment in Over 650 Women,” Dr. Abayomi said, “With the introduction of HIFU technology, the treatment process for fibroid has become seamless.”
He advised patients with fibroid-related cases to seek medical advice before embarking on any treatment, adding that early detection leads to better outcomes.
Also speaking, Consultant Gynecologist and HIFU expert at Nordica Fertility Centre, Dr. John Bakut, highlighted some benefits of the modern technology, which include a lower rate of complications and no risk of blood loss or damage to organs and tissue.
According to him, “HIFU is a non-invasive technology that can treat all fibroid-related diseases.”
Dr. Bakut further stated that with HIFU, a patient can be treated in one hour and go home the same day, adding that symptom relief is high with the procedure.
On her part, the Mandate Secretary for Health Services and Environment Secretariat, FCT, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, advised women to pay attention to their health and seek early medical diagnosis.
“It is unfortunate that many women continue to delay seeking care due to fear, misinformation, stigma, cost, or limited awareness of available treatment options. As healthcare leaders, we must continue to advocate for early diagnosis, timely intervention, and equitable access to safe and effective treatment services,” she said.
She called on Nigerians to join hands in the fight against fibroid, cancer, and other related diseases.
The Mandate Secretary said “The remarkable experience shared by experts who have successfully treated hundreds of women using HIFU demonstrates that innovation, when combined with expertise and partnership, can transform healthcare delivery.”
Dr. Adedolapo added that the 2026 Reproductive Health Week in the FCT provided clinicians the opportunity to explore better ways to address fibroid and cervical cancer.“Effective diagnosis and treatment are what we are advocating.
“With the introduction of innovation, we are now in a better position to address these challenges through collaboration, innovation, and a shared commitment to improving women’s health,” she added.
Part of the activities for the 2026 Reproductive Health Week in the FCT was the donation of a HIFU machine for the treatment of cervical lesions and fibroid-related diseases to Wuse District Hospital in Abuja by Nordica Fertility Centre.
