This event which began in 1994 aims at promoting the various trends in contemporary photography and video in Africa, creates international exchanges between artists, audiences, curators, collectors and media.
Involving a variety of local and international partners (museums, galleries, foundations, art centers, public places, the French cultural centers, art schools, training centers in photography, cultural associations) Les Rencontres includes a series of exhibitions spread throughout Bamako which then translate into a bigger group exhibition around a lighthouse.
This year’s edition which is 9th is themed ‘For a Sustainable World’ under the artistic direction of Laura and Michket Krifa Seran with Samuel Sidibé as Commissioner General.
Due to the fact that few curators invited in major international events live and work in Africa, organisers state that this forum is also to encourage access by art critics and curators to African art.
Targeted at enabling the visibility of African photographers and video makers on the continent and internationally, it is also expected to allow for the emergence and recognition of young African curators of contemporary art.
Meanwhile, an experienced curator who will propose and implement the exhibition come November, 2011 in Bamako is yet to emerge as calls are being made for interested parties apply.
