A dirge for PDP in Nasarawa

Apart from initiating projects and establishing fundamental administrative reforms that are already yielding positive results for everyone to see in Nasarawa State, Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, in his characteristic silence, is equally supervising the complete dismantling of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state. For the PDP which was in power since the dawn of the present dispensation of democracy in 1999, all may not be well considering the gradual erosion of the support base of the party, with stalwarts of the PDP constantly being wooed to the folds of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).Considering the cold treatment Governor Al-Makura received back in 2011 when he first contested for the governorship ticket under the PDP, one would have thought Al-Makura would become vindictive by denying those who attempted to frustrate his political ambition through the brazen manipulation of the laws and procedures of the PDP congresses as well as the sale of expression of interest forms. However, the governor has proved pundits wrong by upholding and propagating the true tenets of democracy.

Recall that when Al-Makura declared his intention to contest against former governor Aliyu Doma, the PDP quickly moved to frustrate this ambition by refusing to sell the nomination form to Al-Makura as well as organised a lopsided party congress where only loyalists of the incumbent then became delegates. However, working from a high moral standing, with resolve to initiate fundamental reforms in the administration of the state, Al-Makura, without much noise as is generally the case, has not only brought about tremendous development to the state but is succeeding in whittling down the opposition to near extinction. This, the governor has achieved not through underhand tactics or manipulation but through good leadership, exemplary character and due consultations! Checkout the list of former PDP members but who now are proud card carrying members of the APC.

Senator Abubakar Sodangi, Hon Wadada, Hon. Godiya Akwashiki, Senator Danboyi, Barrister Z.Z Allumaga, Mrs. Aisha Mbaka, as well as former chairmen of Nasarawa Eggon and Kokona LGAs. Al-Makura is a perfect example of the upholder and promoter of democratic tenets. Decisions are taken after due consultation with stakeholders unlike the tyrannical tendencies of yore. The recent defection of Hon Aliyu Wadada from the PDP to the APC has somewhat dealt a fatal blow to the opposition PDP in Nasarawa State.

Without fanfare and noise making, Al-Makura is gradually depleting the ranks of the opposition such that come 2019, the APC in Nasarawa State will only consolidate its grip on power. For the PDP in Nasarawa State, it’s sunset as supporters continue to jump ship in a bid to escape the grounded ship.

Ali Abare Abubakar, Keffi, Nasarawa State.
