The reunion takes place at Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja at 10am. It will be recalled in 1979 the Federal government of Nigeria established the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS). The Institute serves as a high level centre of reflection, research, and dialogue where academics of intellectual excellence, policy initiators and executors and other citizens of practical experience and wisdom drawn from different sectors of national life in Nigeria meet annually to reflect and exchange ideas on the great issues of society, particularly as they relate to Nigeria and Africa in the context of the dynamics of a constantly changing world. The Institute’s laudable objectives are;
• To promote the noble ideals of the National Institute as embodied in its motto: “Towards a Better Society”;
•To promote understanding, unity, brotherhood and cooperation among the members;
•To strengthen the relationship between the Association and the National Institute with a view to maintaining synergy;
•To interact with the federal and state governments of Nigeria, other organisations or associations, with similar objectives;
•To establish the means of contributing objectively to national discourse on any issues affecting the positive development of Nigeria and proffer appropriate recommendation and implementation strategies to the government;
• To serve as think-tank to the federal and state governments of Nigeria;
• To maintain the highest standards of conduct, etiquette and discipline among its members;
• To establish schemes for the promotion of the welfare, security and economic advancement of members;
• To create and maintain an endowment fund for the proper observance and discharge of any of the objectives of the Association.
The Reunion of respected Members of the National Institute is expected to feature notable foundation members such as, Gen Ibrahim Babangida (SEC 1) who is also the Chairman of Board of Patrons, Maj Gen D Jemibewon (rtd), (SEC 1), Senator Olabiyi Durojaiye (SEC 1) and Prince J Adelusi-Adeluyi. Others are HE Alhaji Mohammed Sa’ad Abubakar III, Sultan of Sokoto; Chairman Heritage Council, HRM Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe, Obi of Onitsha, HRM Oba Rilwan Babatunde Aremu Akiolu, Oba of Lagos;HRH Alhaji Iliyasu Bashar Emir of Gwandu, HRM Alhaji Sani Sami Emir of Zuru, and the HRH Alhaji Ahmed Hassan II, Emir of Nasarawa who is also of SEC 1.
The Re-Union conference will be declared open by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR. The Chairman of the event is Professor Ibrahim Gambari, Former Minister of Foreign Affairs. His Excellency, Mr John Kofi Agyekum Kufuor, former President of Ghana, is the distinguished Guest Speaker expected at the event to speak on the theme; Managing Democratic Transition in a Diverse Country.
Nigeria holds what promises to be a significant democratic election in February 2015. The Reunion interactive session therefore compliments the efforts of the Federal government of Nigeria to have a credible election consistent with the motto of the Alumni Association of the National Institute – Towards a Better Society. The Chief Hosts are the President of AANI, Maj. General (Rtd) Lawrence A. Onoja, PhD, mni; Secretary General of AANI, Comrade Issa Aremu, mni, and other members of the current National Executive Council. Special Guests include AANI’s past and serving Governors, Ministers, Chief Executives of government’s establishments, Captains of Industry, Members of the Diplomatic Corps among others. The highlight of the Reunion includes the interactive lecture by the Honourable Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Olusegun Olutoyin Aganga who is expected to address the critical mass of the prestigious members of the National Institute on the recently launched Nigeria Industrial Revolution Plan (NIRP).
Respected Members of the National Institute that include serving and past top level executives from the Banking and financial sector, the presidency, states and local governments, civil service, Armed Forces, academia, labour and paramilitary institutions among others are expected at the historic Reunion. National Institute has graduated 1784 participants that include former three military Heads of state, namely General Ibrahim Babangida, General Abdulsalami and late General Sani Abacha.
