Newborn twins – a boy and a girl, have been rescued after they were abandoned at a refuse dump in Vandeikya Local Government Area of Benue State.
The babies were reportedly discovered on Saturday by a local government sanitation task force during a routine exercise at a bushy dumpsite in Mbaaji, Ningev Council Ward, popularly known as Wangbeen Jor.
It was gathered that the team immediately evacuated the infants to safety and handed them over to the council authorities.
Chairman of Vandeikya Local Government, Dennis Guda, who received the twins at the council secretariat, pledged to cater for their welfare and upbringing.
He subsequently named the children Guda-Alia and Alia-Doo, assuring that they would be given proper care and opportunities.
Guda, in a telephone interview with our correspondent in Makurdi on Tuesday, said upon receiving the report, he took the children to a clinic where they were treated and are now in a safe condition.
The Director of Child Welfare at the Benue State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Janet Dagba, who confirmed the incident, said fear of social rejection, economic hardship, and limited access to reproductive health education often push vulnerable girls into desperate actions.
“We are aware of the case. Our social worker in Vandeikya informed us when it was reported by a community leader. We also learnt that the LGA chairman visited and made provisions for the children’s care,” she said.
Efforts to get a response from the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Benue State Command, DSP Udeme Edet, were unsuccessful, as she did not respond to calls and messages as of the time of filing this report.
