The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has appointed Abbas Jimoh as its new spokesperson.
Jimoh was an assistant editor at Media Trust Limited, publishers of Daily Trust newspapers and owners of Trust TV and Trust Radio.
He spent 20 years in the company covering several beats, including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) and some political parties.
He had also covered international events in Africa, Europe and Asia.
His experience and thoroughness earned him a fellowship with the Bloomberg Media Initiative Africa (BMIA), Bloomberg Institute, United States; in partnership with the Lagos Business School (LBS), Lagos State Nigeria.
He is also a fellow of the MTN-Nigeria Media Innovation Programme (MIP) second cohort in partnership with the Pan Atlantic University (PAU), Lekki, Lagos State and the Lagos Business School (LBS).
Jimoh described his appointment as an opportunity to serve Nigeria and the Muslim community.
“This is a huge responsibility and I am not taking it for granted. The NSCIA has been an organisation I have reported and this appointment serves as a way to gain more insight into how it advocates in strengthening Islam and cohesion among Muslims in the country, all in the collective quest for national development,” Jimoh said.
The NSCIA is the apex Islamic authority in Nigeria.
It was established in 1973 to “cater for, preserve, protect, promote and advance the interest of Islam and Muslims throughout the country” and has been responsible for the unity of Nigerian Muslims as the official body, recognised by the federal and state governments, coordinating the affairs of Islam in Nigeria.
