Speaking when he visited the Kuje medium security prisons in the FCT where the two arrested Rivers politicians, Charles Amenfule and Leo Anyanwu were being detained, Senator Abe who chairs the Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources downstream urged Nigerians to stand up against what he called “the emerging pattern of dictatorship and violation of fundamental human rights of Nigerians”.
“I don’t know whether we as citizens are watching what is happening in this country. It is not about Ameachi or Rivers State it is about the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and if they are doing it today in Rivers state and we don’t say anything, people don’t condemn it and nobody says it is wrong, tomorrow even some of the people who are doing these things will also need the protection of the constitution. All Nigerians without exception from the president to the least person must be careful about what happens to the constitution of this country and what happens to the rights and privileges that we are supposed to enjoy as citizens of a democratic nation”, the Senator said.
“So as we speak they are political prisoners in Nigeria because the offence for which they were charged has no relationship whatsoever to the Federal Capital Territory. The allegation that by the announcement  that they made suspending the honourable member they were inciting violence or impersonation or whatever it is, these are things that ordinarily should have been tried in Port Harcourt  by provisions of our constitution and not Abuja.”
Abe also faulted the procedure for their arrest because according to him, nobody knew that they were arrested or even brought to Abuja where they were charged before a magistrate’s court without legal representation and described them as “political prisoners.”
