Abia State Commissioner for Education, Professor Ikechi Mgbeoji, has called on the state government to urgently take measures in tackling the acute shortage of mathematics and science teachers in public schools.
He said the shortage of teachers for mathematics and science was partly responsible for students’ phobia and poor performance in the subjects in public examinations across the state.
“As a teacher and commissioner for education in the state, the government is not satisfied with the performance of students in public examinations especially in mathematics and science related subjects. Out of all the teachers we have, both in public and private schools a sizable number of them teach English language and other subjects, with very few teachers for mathematics, physics and chemistry,” he said.
Mgbeoji, in an interview in Umuahia, asked the government to provide incentives that will encourage mathematics and science teachers in the state.
He said that the state government, in collaboration with National Mathematics Center Abuja, has converted Abayi Girls Secondary School to a teacher training institute for the retraining of teachers.
