The agency’s General Manager, Engr. Ndukwe Agu who disclosed this to Daily Trust in Aba said blocked drainages were the primary cause of flooding and collapse of roads, adding that it was necessary to open up the drainages to ensure the roads are durable.
He said: “There are a reasonable number of strategic places that require our maintenance intervention. So we came and started the repair activities and discovered along the line there are immediate and remote causes of failures for most of these roads and foremost among them is this blockage of drainages.”
He added that, as a lasting solution to save the roads from continuous failure and to ensure that those that are being repaired last for a long time, they decided to open up the drains to guarantee the free flow of water to ensure that their work lasts and also to protect further failures occasioned by the stagnation of water on road surfaces.
According to Agu in order to have the desirability of their work, the need to go the extra mile became necessary, which is by opening of drains to avoid flooding and also ensure proper channeling of water.
“When you do a good drainage work or you de-silt the drains, you wouldn’t have flooding because the water will always find its way,” Agu added.
While commending the Abia Environmental Protection Agency for giving the city a new face by adequately managing waste in the city, Agu appealed to residents to desist from pouring liquid and solid wastes in the drainages, adding that they should also do their part in cleaning up the drainages in their areas.
