Abia govt begins redevelopment of Ariaria Int’l Market

The Abia State government has announced that it would commence the immediate redevelopment of the Ariaria International Market Aba, the foremost market in the Southeast geopolitical zone.

The redevelopment of the market, according to the government, would be done in phases.

The Commissioner for Information, Chief John Okiyi Kalu, said the government decided to embark on the project in order “to tackle its age-long structural issues with many of the shops as well as provide the necessary modern infrastructure to deal with the perennial flooding challenges.”

The administration, he further disclosed, would also deliver to the market other amenities like befitting car parks, conveniences, beautification of the surroundings, improved fire-fighting capacity and such other facilities.

Kalu said a cabal in the market had been profiting from its current state and had sought to place unnecessary legal barriers and other obstacles on the path of government’s efforts, adding that legal processes had hampered previous attempts at commencing works in the market in April 2021.
