Abiodun Koya performs at FIFA dinner, announces upcoming ‘sci-fi/opera’ concert

Nigerian-born US-based Classical/Opera singer, Abiodun Koya, performed at the Transcorp Hilton at the Coca-Cola/FIFA World Cup Tour, where the most coveted sports trophy was unveiled to guests, fans and government officials. Her rendition of the Nigerian national anthem, with her signature vocals, thrilled the audience.

Koya later performed ‘I will Raise My Voice’, a song she says she wrote and performed “In honour of our dear country, Nigeria”. Her performance was the high point of the black tie dinner which had Nigerian and global football legends in attendance.

The singer also announced that she will soon unveil the title and premise of an upcoming concert she will hold in Abuja. “It’s an epic opera, and classical music, with science fiction elements,” she said, promising songs and special effects that will “blow the minds of the audience”.

Koya is a trained classical vocalist and actress who started her music career at age six, singing in church and birthday celebrations under her parents’ mentorship. She has grown to be one of the very few Africans who sing opera. She has performed at high-profile events in the United States, notably in honour of then-president Barack Obama.
