Abisoye Ajayi-Akinfolarin has long been a trailblazer in technology education and economic empowerment, particularly for marginalized groups. With her newly published book, Empowering Future Tech Innovators: A Mother’s Guide for Inspiring Her Daughter’s Love for Artificial Intelligence, released in May 2023, Abisoye has once again demonstrated her dynamism and ability to adapt to emerging global trends. The book, a practical guide aimed at demystifying artificial intelligence (AI) for ordinary people and encouraging parents to introduce their children to AI, underscores her continued commitment to breaking barriers in technology access.

Abisoye’s passion for empowering the underserved is evident in her words, as she writes in her book:

“On November 11th, 2022, the world changed. ChatGPT was released as a prototype and made a sterling first impression. I was stunned. My first interaction with AI was with Eliza, a chatbot that sought to mimic human conversational responses, it was a clever chatbot that could, in some way, fool you, it was indeed human. However, as I was concluding the revision of this book, ChatGPT passed the Turing test! Indeed now we have AI! And i don’t anyone to miss this opportunity not my community that tend to always be left behind”

In this excerpt, Abisoye explains how AI has evolved from being a niche technology into a tool with profound implications for everyday life. She emphasizes how parents, particularly mothers, can guide their children toward understanding and engaging with AI in practical ways, likening the process to raising a child:

“If you have ever raised a child, then you have experienced, in a crude way, artificial intelligence. For every correction and clarification made to a child, it learns about the right responses to the world around it. So you are already familiar in a way with AI” 

A Legacy of Economic Empowerment

Abisoye’s latest book builds on over a decade of impactful work, particularly through her nonprofit, Pearls Africa Foundation. Her model of empowering young girls through digital literacy and community-driven projects has been hailed as one of the most consequential approaches to economic development in the last decade.

Her impact didn’t go unnoticed. In 2018, she was named a CNN Hero, an accolade that underscored her leadership in advancing female participation in Nigeria’s tech sector. That same year, she received the prestigious ONE Women of the Year Award for her exceptional contributions to gender equity and her commitment to empowering women and girls through education and technology. She was also recognized with the Humanitarian Award for Most Powerful Change Makers, celebrating her work in fostering societal change through tech-based initiatives and advocacy for young girls.

Prominent voices have lauded Abisoye’s contributions. Blaise Aboh, founder of Orodata, an economic development nonprofit, described her model as globally significant. “Economists have been trying to find ways to break poor families out of the poverty trap. Abisoye’s model is one of the most effective solutions globally, and the awards she has received rightly celebrate this groundbreaking contribution,” he said.

Opeyemi Awoyemi, a tech investor and CEO of Fastforward Ventures, added, “Her not-for-profit model withstands any scrutiny. The capital invested in each girl eventually transforms the lives of their family in the long run. Abisoye’s ability to adapt and publish a book introducing a new audience to AI is a testament to her dynamism. The book is a great read, full of practical advice.”

 Her Personal Quest for Growth and Global Recognition 

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Abisoye expanded her expertise by earning a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University and an MBA with a focus on cybersecurity from Ottawa University. These achievements positioned her for a global role in driving innovation, social entrepreneurship and economic development. She was also named one of the Top 10 Most Successful Women in Tech by BusinessWorld Africa, further solidifying her status as a trailblazer in Nigeria’s tech industry and an inspiration for aspiring female technologists.

In 2019, Melinda Gates recognized Abisoye as one of six Nigerians contributing significantly to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in education and gender equality. She has also been celebrated by Global Citizen alongside other global leaders for her commitment to equipping young girls with skills for economic and social empowerment.

As she writes, “AI and machine learning have become buzzwords, often shrouded in inaccessible jargon. But at their core, these concepts are about teaching computers to learn from data themselves without being spoon-fed instructions. With the right guidance, anyone can understand and contribute to this transformative field.”
