The Sustainable Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards Enhancement Centre of Excellence (SPESSE-CE) at the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has trained some professionals in sustainable procurement practices as part of efforts to promote transparency, accountability, and environmental responsibility in both public and private sectors.

The training was designed to equip them with the knowledge and tools required to integrate environmental and social standards into procurement processes.

The Centre Director and Leader of SPESSE-CE, ABU Zaria, Professor Wisdom Japhet, said the initiative is critical in building a new generation of professionals who understand the importance of sustainability in procurement practices.

Also speaking, the Academic Coordinator, Procurement Management Node, Professor Maikudi Yusuf, explained that the training is structured to address both theoretical and practical aspects of procurement, ensuring participants gain hands-on experience.

Similarly, the centre coordinator, Engr. Lawal Salisu stressed the importance of aligning procurement processes with global environmental and social standards.

The participants expressed optimism about the programme, describing it as an opportunity to improve their professional capacity and contribute meaningfully to their organisations.

A participant, Muhammed Aliyu, said the training would enhance his understanding of sustainable procurement practices.

Another participant, Adeyemi Monisade, noted that the knowledge gained would help improve efficiency and accountability in procurement processes.

For Lara Olaniyi, the programme offers valuable insights into integrating environmental considerations into everyday professional activities.

The SPESSE-CE at ABU Zaria was established to produce highly skilled environmental and procurement specialists, as part of efforts to address identified skill gaps by the World Bank and the National Universities Commission.
