Speaking during the ceremony, President Goodluck Jonathan urged Nigerian universities to always pursue goals that would facilitate unity, growth and the corporate existence of Nigeria.
Represented by the Minister of Education, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, Jonathan promised to increase access to quality education, saying that his administration had increased admission intake into universities from 400,000 to over one million.
The president advised the graduating students to apply the knowledge and skills they acquired in the development of their societies and Nigeria at large.
Explaining the composition of the graduates, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Abdullahi Mustapha, said 33 graduated with first class, 1,273 with second class upper, 5,064 earned second class lower, 2,287 had third class, while 183 graduated with pass grades.
He added that 2,136 had Post Graduate Diploma, 2,339 were masters’ degree graduates and 360 had PhDs.
Professor Mustapha told the graduates that they are now part of the over 500,000 alumni that ABU has produced in the last 50 years.
“I implore you to conduct yourselves on the basis of solid character defined by humility, honesty, dedication, respect, tolerance, moderation and sacrifice for the sake of others and the society. I also urge you to use the skills, knowledge and the good character you have acquired in ABU for the service of society and humanity,” Professor Mustapha said.
Our correspondent reports that three Nigerians, including Dr Shettima Ali Monguno C.F.R. educationalist and politician, were awarded the honorary degrees of the university.
