The Director, Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Professor Ibrahim Abubakar, has said that Africa’s wheat production is declining in spite of high demand therefore new technologies must be adopted to boost production.
Professor Abubakar made the remark, yesterday, at the Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation (TAAT) Wheat Annual Review and Planning Meeting in Abuja, noting that effort should be made to adopt strategies to narrow the wheat gap of Africa.
He said the essence of the meeting on ‘Towards Greater Wheat Self-Sufficiency Through Upscaling of Improved Wheat Technologies’, was meant to review the progress and achievements of the 2018/19 scaling up activities by project component, IP sites and country against anticipated targets.
He said the meeting would also formulate and agree on priority TAAT wheat plan of work for 2019/20 by component, IP sties and country.
The meeting also assessed the 2018/19 financial implementation and conducted a TAAT wheat fiduciary training on AfDB financial rules, procedures and reporting formats.
