The Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has lost its first Professor of Broadcasting, Sandra Ladi Adamu, who passed away on Wednesday morning at the National Hospital Abuja, after a protracted illness. She was 67.

Born on July 17, 1958, in Yaba, Lagos, Professor Adamu hailed from the family of the late Sgt. Major Adamu Pankshin, the first Nigerian to become Regimental Sergeant Major of the Nigerian Army Corps of Engineers, Kaduna.

She attended Queen Amina College, Kakuri, Kaduna, before obtaining a B.A. in Mass Communication (Radio and Television) from Columbia College, Los Angeles, and a B.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication from City University, London. She also earned an M.A. in Communication Arts (Film) from Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, a PGD in Development Studies from Mount Carmel Golda Meir Institute, Haifa (Israel), and a Ph.D. in Communication.

Her career began as a Public Relations Officer at the Nigerian Consulate in Atlanta, Georgia (1982–1984). She later worked as a News Editor during her NYSC at NTA Jos (1984–1985) and continued with the NTA until 1987.

Professor Adamu joined the ABU’s Department of Mass Communication in 1999, where she rose through the ranks to become Northern Nigeria’s first female Professor of Broadcasting, leaving behind a legacy of scholarship and mentorship that shaped generations of communicators.
