An umbrella body of workers at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Zaria had staged a peaceful protest over what they called anomalies in 2016 promotion exercise and non-payment of allowances arrears since 2014.

Speaking with Daily Trust on Thursday, the chairman of the Joint Consultative Forum of the workers, Mr. Lawal Taufiq Bafsalam, said the protest was staged in order to communicate their grievances to relevant authorities.

“The protest was about our accumulated relativity allowance, skipping arrears, uniform and promotion arrears. One of the most boiling issues now is the recent anomalies in 2016 promotion, where somebody somewhere sad down and rewrite scheme of service. We now have people who have been promoted but not advancing to the next level. These are some of the injustices we are peacefully fighting,” Bafsalam said.

He said they opted for protest instead of strike because they have the interest of their patients at heart. However, if their demands are not resolved through dialogue, he said the union would have no other option than to call its members to embark on strike.

Daily Trust reports that the Joint Consultative Forum comprises 10 unions which include National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria and Health Workers Union of Nigeria, among others.
