This was made disclosed to Feverpitch by one of the initiators of the club and Head Coach of badminton in the FCT, Mohammed Bako.

He explained that the legal aspects concerning registration of the club have been dealt with and in a very short time, the club which is to carter for all ages would commence in earnest.

Bako said the decision to float the club was informed by the pressing need to arrest the dwindling fortunes of the game in the country as he said the country has ended the year 2011 without a single serious competition.

The coach said the Abuja Badminton club would concentrate on organizing competitions and also getting sponsors for such championships which he said would go a long way in engendering more interest in the sport among the youths.

He said: “Badminton stakeholders in Abuja have come together to float a club that would carter for the needs of the teeming youth who want to participate in the sport and also make a career out of badminton. We have completed work on the legal aspects of it and very soon, the club would debut in Abuja.

“As the name implies it is going to be Abuja based and the club would concentrate on identifying and nurturing talents for the FCT and Nigeria. It is our intention to organize competitions and also source for sponsors to partner with us. The aim is to make the Abuja club a model to be emulated”.

Bako maintained that with the way things are going, if something urgent is not done in the area of tournaments and talents hunting, Nigerian badminton would suffer the same fate that has befallen other sports like football.

“At the moment every Nigerian is bemoaning what has become of the country’s football but the same thing is going on in badminton and we feel we have to do something in time to salvage the situation before it will be too late”.
