Farinto, who gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) last Sunday in Jos, said that government’s over-dependence on oil was not good for the country.

He said the government should explore other viable areas of the economy such as agriculture, in the drive to diversify the nation’s economy, rather than depend solely on oil.

“The nation’s over-dependence on oil, to provide job opportunities, especially for the teeming youths and for revenue is unhealthy,’’ he said.”

He frowned at the level of corruption in the country and decried a situation where the country had nothing to show for the abundant wealth God had blessed it with.

Farinto called on Nigerians to vote for only people with genuine desire to serve the country and who would uplift their standard of living.

He said that past leaders who had the opportunity to better the lots of the people, but failed to do so should be rejected at the poll.

Farinto, however, appealed to the Federal Government to put in place a credible and transparent electoral body to conduct the 2011 elections.

“The electoral body and the Chairman must be such that will conduct credible elections devoid of past malpractices as a way of deepening the country’s democracy,” he said.

The ECWA President condemned the incessant religious crises in Plateau and some states in the northern part of the country and tasked Acting President Goodluck Jonathan to act decisively to curb the ugly trend.

Farinto appealed to Christians in Plateau and other states in the northern parts of the country to co-exist peacefully with adherents of other religions to move the country forward. (NAN)
