The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has begun maintenance and repair works on the damaged Abuja-Kaduna rail line following a derailment incident that occurred on Tuesday.
Abuja Metro reports that a Kaduna-bound train, which departed from the Kubwa train station around 11 am that day, derailed a few minutes later upon arrival at the Asham sub-station, located in the Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The train’s engine and the two coaches directly behind it were severely damaged. The remaining six coaches also went off track, with only the executive coach remaining intact. Our reporter, who returned to the Kubwa railway station yesterday, learned that the repair work, reportedly awarded to a Chinese company, began on Wednesday.
A source explained that three coaches—two VIP and one executive—had already been rolled back to the main Abuja railway station in Idu on the evening of the incident.

“The Chinese engineers returned to Asham this morning (yesterday) to continue the job, which will include lifting the remaining coaches and then fixing the damaged rail lines, a process that will take some days,” the source added.
Meanwhile, most staff and other service providers at the train station are now on leave until the work is completed.
Those affected, including ticket providers, porters, cleaners, and taxi drivers, have reportedly left the facility, making the area quiet.
